Dietitian in Weslaco, TX | Basic Habits

Every client who sits down with me is more than a chart of lab values, they're a whole household, a whole history, a whole relationship with food that didn't start yesterday. That's especially true for the women and families I work with managing diabetes, prediabetes, and PCOS across the Mid Valley. Basic Habits treats your numbers as one part of the picture, never the whole story.

Weslaco sits at the heart of what locals call the Mid Valley, close enough to Mercedes and Donna that families often move easily between the three. The South Texas College Mid Valley campus and the Valley Nature Center both give the city its own quiet identity, distinct from the bigger pull of McAllen further west. It's a community where agriculture still shapes daily rhythms, and where a family recipe often means more than any nutrition label.

Clients here often describe feeling caught between two worlds, wanting to manage a diagnosis seriously while refusing to let go of the meals that connect them to their family and their history. That tension is exactly what generic diet plans get wrong, treating culture as an obstacle instead of a resource. My work starts from the opposite assumption.

Here is how the work unfolds.

Step 1
Your culture's food isn't a problem to solve around, it's the foundation the whole plan gets built on, because a plan that fights your traditions was never going to last.
Step 2
Getting started means telling me about your labs and your table, both at once, so I understand the full picture before we build anything.
Step 3
From there, sessions become a steady collaboration, adjusting your plan as your labs and your life both continue to shift.

Women here often carry the weight of managing their own health while also being the ones who keep the family fed the way it's always been fed. What tends to ease is the guilt around wanting both, health progress and the meals that matter to your family. We build your plan around your labs and your table, never asking you to choose one over the other. Sessions happen virtually, fitting easily around Mid Valley schedules.

Parents here often worry that addressing a child's weight means giving up the family meals that carry real meaning at the table. That worry tends to ease once it's clear those meals can stay, just adjusted with intention. We build around the dishes your family already makes, finding small shifts rather than a whole new menu.

Clients here often fear that a diabetes diagnosis means giving up the recipes passed down through generations. That fear tends to loosen once we find real ways to keep those recipes on the table. We work through your labs and medication while keeping your family's food traditions firmly in the plan.

Clients often notice the sugar cravings hit hardest after the same traditional meals that mean the most to them. That pattern tends to shift once meals are paired with more intention, not eliminated entirely. We adjust timing and pairing around dishes you actually want to keep eating.

Women managing PCOS here often feel pressure to cut out entire categories of traditional food to see any results. That pressure tends to ease once we find a plan that manages symptoms without erasing your table. We track your cycle and cravings while keeping cultural staples part of the plan.

Clients preparing to conceive here often worry that fertility nutrition means adopting a completely unfamiliar way of eating. That worry tends to ease once the plan builds on familiar food instead of replacing it. We build a foundation around your cycle using ingredients already in your kitchen.

Expecting moms here often receive a handout that has nothing to do with the meals their family actually cooks. The stress tends to ease once the plan reflects your real trimester and your real kitchen. We build your plan around your typical plate, staying aligned with your OBGYN's monitoring.

New moms here often feel pressure to lose weight quickly while also protecting their milk supply and their family's routine. A gradual plan tends to ease that pressure, protecting both goals together. We build around your feeding schedule and your household's usual meals.

Families here often worry that addressing a child's weight means abandoning meals tied to their heritage. That worry tends to lift once it's clear those meals can stay, adjusted with care. We look at your family's full routine, keeping cultural staples part of the shift.

Men here often try extreme diets that cut out the traditional meals they actually want to keep eating. What tends to change is finding a sustainable plan that doesn't require giving those meals up. We build structure around your schedule and your family's table, not a generic fad diet.

Areas I serve

I support families throughout Weslaco and the neighboring Mid Valley communities of Mercedes and Donna. Most sessions happen virtually, so you can meet with me whether you're near the South Texas College Mid Valley campus or further into the surrounding countryside. The plan we build together respects the food that matters to your family.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is it worth seeing a dietitian for weight loss?

Yes, especially if you've tried plans on your own and had them fall apart. A dietitian builds a plan around your actual labs, schedule, and culture instead of a generic template, which is usually the missing piece.

  • Can a dietitian help me to lose weight?

Yes. We focus on sustainable structure instead of restriction, so the weight loss you see is the kind that actually stays off, because the habits behind it fit your real life.

  • Can a dietitian prescribe Ozempic?

No, medications like Ozempic are prescribed by your physician. What I can do is help you understand how your medication works alongside your nutrition, so you feel informed instead of anxious about it.

  • What should you not say to a dietitian?

Honestly, there isn't anything you can't say here. This is a judgment free space, and the more honest you are about your habits, your fears, and your real schedule, the better your plan will actually fit.

  • What is the 30 30 30 rule for weight loss?

It's a trending rule about protein and morning movement, and like most trends, it can work for some people and not others. We'll figure out together what actually fits your body and your day instead of chasing every new rule online.

  • Does my insurance cover this?

Most of my clients already have insurance that covers this care. We'll help you check your coverage before your first session, so cost is never a surprise.

  • What is your cancellation policy?

Life happens, and we ask for at least 24 hours notice if you need to reschedule or cancel a session. (24-hour notice or a $30 no-show fee)

  • Do you accept insurance, and how do I check my coverage?

Most of my clients already have insurance that covers this care. Before your first visit, we'll help you check your specific plan's coverage so you know exactly what to expect, with no surprise bill.
